I love this series. The video captures are absolutely stunning. I don't know why I didn't watch it sooner. I've had it for over a year now and only just started watching the series. Majestic, touching, and most of all, relaxing.
One thing I will mention is that I was watching this at around 1:30am last night and fell asleep while doing so... and I still wake up at 9:30am :( Med school is preventing me from being able to sleep in.

- My name is Daren. I currently attend LECOM in Bradenton, FL. This is currently my 4th year of med school. I created this blog to post my thoughts about medical school. And because I rock. Boom. So please, come make yourself at home and enjoy my musings. If you are easily offended by things (ie sarcasm, being politically incorrect, etc) then I suggest you evacuate the immediate vicinity :)

Middle of 3rd Year Optimism
Why hello there one and all.
So 3rd year of medical school is going and going... it's flying by yet seems to linger on like a mildly distasteful beer. I am currently on an Infectious Disease rotation (aka ID) and it's pretty awesome. Certainly a change from the last couple months where OB/GYN and pediatrics made me want to shoot myself in the face multiple times. Needless to say, I've already eliminated those two specialties from my future. However, ID seems very promising. I enjoy it because the consults are fairly fast paced yet interesting. It's almost like a break from Internal Medicine because you can more or less ignore a lot of the bs that interns deal with and just focus on the reason for the consult. However, as an ID specialist, you can also act as the attending physician for certain patients and manage them as a whole. Sure, you can do something similar as a cardiologist or any other specialty really... but there is something about dealing with microbes that is utterly fascinating to me. Such small things can bring down the largest beast or smartest human. It's constantly a race between us and the bugs.
3rd year is formidable yet awesome at the same time. You win sometimes but you lose a lot. Sometimes you're brilliant and bring back a pulse from asystole, but sometimes you put the blood pressure cuff on inside out and the attending has to correct you in front of the patient. It makes the rotations go by very quickly. By the end of each shift you're likely to be dead tired and hungry, but on days where you're in the office and the drug reps bring food, you leave happy.
Regardless, I am quite pleased with how life is going in general so far. Everyone has been so supportive of me and keeping me entertained. Word. My beer cellar has reached a fairly impressive number. I learned some new things on the guitar. I'm able to keep a beat when playing drums for longer than before. My friends have matched with their desired residencies. Woot. So there you have it.

Something different?
Ok so I was thinking I'd try something new. If you know me relatively well, you probably realize that my brain can never shut off. I can't ever just "do nothing" because I get bored and my mind wanders and keeps on running. It has been known to irritate me sometimes because it actually makes me tired from thinking so much. For example, after final exams last year I wanted to just lay around the house and pool and rest my mind for half a day. Lo and behold, I got bored and had to go do something. After my board exam in May, I wanted to let my brain just chill but of course, I couldn't do something mindless and let my brain rest because it just kept on going even though it felt pooped.
So in light of that, I want to just let my brain babble for a bit. For the next few minutes, I will let my brain run wild, no control of my thoughts, just let it go and in the meantime, I'll be typing out the various things that come to mind. I think in both words and pictures and obviously I can't type out a picture so I'll just describe what the picture represents as it shows up. And of course, I won't be able to keep up with every little thing my cerebrum spews out, but I'll hit at least the main points. Separate ideas are separated by commas. Periods represent a whole new line of thought. Ok let the mayhem ensue.
white computer, shiny, orb, beer cantillon, green shirts stripey, hohos can I get a cookie I can haz cheezburger kitty fatass garfield kitchen mop, mahogany and thrones. Reverse slide the cat, potabananato hahaha couch potato potation is the process of becoming a potato. Why is my phone blinking? Rainbow remote. Ice penguins is the emperor of black metal. I can't spell sometimes. Black shoes. That stupid youtube video about shoes and some gay dude is half singing/talking on it. So stupid. Pink. I miss playing guitar shit I need to change the strings on 3 guitars, need to fix my drums. Oh I got a text message that's why it blinked. Nice pen, really shiny. Trim. Ugh my eyes kind of hurt I hope I don't have glaucoma. Founders sticker, would love KBS right now, mmmm cantill- DRIE FONTEINEN dammit I wish the store would hurry up sending my beer over to my house. Drie fonteinen is awesome, can't wait for Lente, so expensive stupid ebay. Penguins are awesome. I need to figure out rotations stuff in a couple months, hope the anesthesiologist can take me, I hope it's fun and chill because I really don't wanna be uber stressed before having more uber stress at sisters hospital, oh cool I can hang out with Kyle more often should I keep a guitar there? And beer, we need to talk over some beer. Maybe a beer tasting. Ooooo music in a decreasing arpeggio, I think it's in major because it's HAPPY like a penguin!.
So that was just a small taste of my uncontrolled thought process in the matter of about 2 minutes. Hope you enjoyed that :)

Saving lives? Who knew???
So. It has been quite some time since I've last posted here. I feel like I should get an alert that tells me to post after a prolonged period of time. Anyway, here I am during my internal medicine rotation. I have some spare time since I'm doing an overnight shift again and it's pretty quiet around here... except for my music playing haha. I believe the last time I posted was the beginning of 2nd semester of 2nd year. I'll fill y'all in on what went on.
Basically, I studied my ass off and took the first board exam. Joy.
It was pretty uneventful I suppose. I've grown to really like the pathology book, although it's doubtful that I'll become a pathologist. And just when I started liking that book, I don't have to use it any more. Funny how stuff like that happens.
Rotations started last week. As I mentioned before, I'm currently doing IM. It's pretty interesting, although a bit slow here in Batavia, NY. It is as expected though, since I am in the middle of nowhere. I imagine the IM dept of hospitals like NYU or even Strong are much busier. It's hard to believe I can actually put my knowledge to good use. Last Friday there was a Drake concert at Darien Lake (I think I suddenly lost an IQ point for even mentioning the name "Drake.") and there were so many drunk and belligerent people in the ER that I could hardly believe it. The ER was completely full. It was rather fun taking so many H&P's. The one event that stuck in my mind is an elderly lady (who was NOT at the Drake concert) who went into asystole. Obviously, the code was called and the ER doc put me on chest compressions to replace someone who wasn't doing a good job. Miraculously, her heart beat returned after a few moments, albeit a bit messy. But she lived. And I'm not gonna lie, it felt pretty damn good to help save a life. Surreal.
I'll leave y'all with that. Oh, and we had a beer tasting recently that was pretty epic. w00t.

Behavioral Science...
Behavioral science = psychology = stupid labeling of shit known as common sense. Such a waste of time. I'd rather be reading pathology.
Yes, I am bitching about med school. Deal with it. Or GTFO.

Hmm.... So early.
So this year, it's all about the 7:30am classes. Ugh, I'm not a morning person at all. Never have been. Probably never will be either, but I'll figure out a way. I've been trying to get to sleep by 12am to wake up at 6am... but I might change that to 11 or 11:30pm... 6 hours doesn't really cut it for me.
Anyway, it's about time to start. My class doesn't start til 10am today, but I may as well make use of my time. Boards come up so soon...

At The Moment..
Life just sucks. But you deal with it. You just effing deal with it, suck it up, and move on. Humans are made to adapt. If you can't adapt, then you're probably going to be seen as dysfunctional. Worthless. A burden. Don't get to that point. Fight and keep fighting. There's no room for weakness in this world. Get busy living or get busy dying.
That's all I got for ya today.

I feel rather insomnious right now. I'm taking a massive nap after the test later today. I can't believe I stayed up all night :(

I can't wait for Christmas break...
Ugh, so studying is blowing horse manure-covered pygmy marmoset testicles right now. I can't focus because I'm so excited for break, seeing the family, friends, and have some good beer. Well, in light of a couple new trades established today, I did a little bit of shopping. Check it out. Woot!

Happy post-Thanksgiving!
Well this break went by way too fast. Did some studying on the first day back, then for a little more the 2nd day (Tuesday) but frickin a, I'm leaving on a jet plane tomorrow morning and I haven't done shit. *sigh* Well, at least the days were well spent. Here's what I did:
Monday - got home at 11:15pm because the damn plane was delayed and people are inefficient at boarding and exiting aircraft.
Tuesday - studied all day
Wednesday - studied most of the day, did some grocery shopping
Thursday - stuffed my face
Friday - saw Harry Potter, stuffed my face at Chili's, then went to MacGregor's
Saturday - beer tasting with some friends, stuffed my face at the Cantonese House, then chilled
Eff, and it's not even a full week. This is one thing that absolutely blows about med school is that your breaks suck balls epically. Can't wait for Christmas...

Ein gutes Nacht
Not sure if that's proper grammar auf Deutsch or not but whatever. I think tonight was much needed. Studied all day, went out food and clothes shopping, went home, put on some good music and made pizza, had some Sam Adams Double Bock, and rounding up the night with a couple glasses of ruby port and dark chocolate. Can't say I feel guilty for not studying as much as I should for the quiz tomorrow, but I think I needed this. Been having some emo days lately.

Effing a
Ok so that was painful. Like, my nuts hurt type of painful. I've never hated embryology so much. So many "WTF mate?!" type of questions. So now I'm gonna clean the kitchen, rock out, and go have a pint. To hell with it all!
Twas the night before the exam...
And I've been putting in 13 hour days of studying for the past week. Time to rock and roll. With some Infected Mushroom. If you haven't heard of them, you suck and you need to look them up. And now it's time for bed. 8 am exams are emo, especially if they're 4 hour exams covering 20 chapters.
Oh by the way, I drank a liter of cold brewed coffee and a Monster energy drink today. And I'm running on 2.5 hours of sleep. Hip hip hooray. *zoinggggg* :)
